FEA Deflection Analysis
of Newsprint Support Panel
Panel Description
The panel is a rectangle of 70 inches x
48 inches suppported on bearings near the corners. The panel is
required to support a 400 lb. load of newsprint in an area of
48 x 42 inches centered between the bearings. The panel is to
be faced with 304 stainless steel sheet, either 18 gauge on both
faces or with a 16 gauge upper face. The core is to be .50 inch
commercial grade aluminum honeycomb of 1/4-inch cell size. The
long edges are closed with 1 x 1/2 x .065 wall stainless tube.
FEA Model
The panel was modeled using 1504 elements
in a 47 x 32 mesh. ALGOR Type 16 sandwich elements having five
degrees of freedom at each node. The panels were simply supported
at the bearing locations. The edge closeout beams were modeled
in a separate frame file and combined with the panel mesh to produce
the final model. The 400 lb. live load was modeled as a uniform
pressure of 0.178 psi distributed over the previously described
area (outlined on the accompanying figure).
Results
Maximum deflection occurred near the center
of the loaded area in both cases. The panel was 18 gauge faces
deflected 0.062 inch while the panel with a 16 gauge upper face
deflected 0.056 inch, a difference of 10%.
